Compare groups side by side

Select two or more groups in the Groups library and tap Compare. Every group gets a card with its shot count, extreme spread, mean radius, standard deviations, dispersion, CEP-50 and velocity. The tightest by extreme spread is badged BEST and the widest WORST, with how much wider the others are.

Basic keeps it to the essentials. Advanced adds edge-to-edge, width and height, calculated CEP, windage and elevation, a picture of each group zoomed to fit, and the rifle each group came from when you are comparing across rifles.

The mm, cm and in switch changes only this view. Your default unit in Settings stays as it is.

Is the difference real?

With exactly two groups, Compare goes past which one measured tighter. It asks whether the gap is bigger than the noise that so few shots produce on their own, using bootstrap resampling of your own shots rather than a formula that assumes a distribution.

The card gives a plain verdict, not a bare p-value, plus the 95% range for the gap. Both groups need at least three shots. Groups under five shots also get a warning that spread and CEP can be noisy at that size.

No meaningful differenceThe whole plausible range for the gap is under a tenth of the two groups' average mean radius. It is too small to matter.
Likely a real differenceThe gap is big enough to matter and the range excludes zero.
Can't tell from this many shotsThe gap could matter, but the range still includes zero. Shoot more.

The three verdicts, in the order Downrange checks them: size first, then statistics.

Does the tightest group also sit in the flat run?

If the groups you are comparing also fall inside a saved Window, Compare says so, flags which ones are in it, and tells you whether the tightest group is one of them.

The two tabs ask different questions: Compare asks which group shot tightest once, Window asks which run of charges is least sensitive. When they agree, that is the load worth chasing. A tightest group outside the flat run may just have been a good string.

Combine groups into a composite

Select two or more marked groups with a scale set and tap Composite. Downrange re-bases every group's shots around a shared point of aim, when every source has one marked, and otherwise around each group's own centre, then pools them into one group with one set of statistics.

On the group's details, every source keeps its own colour and shape, with a ring at its own average and a crosshair at the average across all of them. That shows whether one outing is dragging the pooled result, not just the pooled shape.

EXAMPLE DATA Three sessions of the same load pooled into one composite. Each source keeps its colour and shape, with a ring at its own average and a crosshair at the average of all of them.

What a composite carries over

  • Every statistic is pooled across all shots and all velocity readings, not averaged group by group.
  • Distance, calibre, load, rifle, charge and seating are kept only where every group agrees. Where they differ, the field is blank rather than wrong.
  • Conditions are averaged only if every group recorded them.
  • The notes record how many groups went in and the dates they span, and tags from every source are kept.
  • A composite is kept in your library. It does not count towards Zero check, and Trend does not plot it.

Keep an analysis for later

A Compare or Window result can be saved with a name. A saved analysis stores which groups it was built from and its settings, and is rebuilt when you open it, so it always reflects the groups as they are now. If groups were deleted and fewer than two remain, it tells you so.

Saved analyses can be reopened any time, even after your free analysis days, without using a day up. While you are viewing one, its controls are read-only. The Window tab's Find window builds the same pooling to answer one question, then keeps nothing.

Good to know

  • Compare needs at least two groups with two or more shots each.
  • Composites need single groups with a scale set.
  • Compare, composites and saved analyses are Pro features, free on your first 3 days of use. Anything you already made stays viewable.
